NASA's Parker Solar Probe captures first close-up from inside Sun's atmosphere

NASAlogodec13.jpg

NASA

Washington [United States], December 13 (ANI): Venturing into the challenging and unexplored territory, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is on a mission to fly close to the Sun and understand more about its environment.
NASA has just released the first image captured by Parker’s WISPR (Wide-Field Imager for Solar Probe), giving us a glimpse into the sun’s atmosphere.
According to Cnet, the image was taken when the probe was about 16.9 million miles from the Sun, inside its corona. It shows two distinct jets of solar material, called coronal streamers. A bright spot in the distance is seen which is gas giant Jupiter.
The Parker Solar Probe has been out on the mission since only four months and already holds records of becoming the closest object to the Sun ever, and the fastest spacecraft in the history.
It will undergo a second flyby in April 2019 while the mission will continue until 2025. (ANI)

Now, AI that can see objects in total darkness

Compputerdec13.jpg

Researchers MIT

Massachusetts [United States], December 13 (ANI): Researchers at the MIT have built a new artificial intelligence system that is capable of spotting objects in near-total darkness.
The system uses deep neural network to look for transparent patterns in dark images. The team trained the AI by feeding it 10,000 purposefully dark, grainy, out-of-focus pictures which gave the system an idea of what to expect and highlight hidden transparent objects, Engadget reported.
After the training, the system could find and reproduce hidden objects in extremely low-light settings. The system demonstrates future capabilities and applications such as nighttime photography, astronomy, or medicine where details in biological material could be captured without light and radiation. Taylor Swift used facial recognition at a concert to track stalkers

taylorswiftoctdec13.jpg

Taylor Swift

California [United States], December 13 (ANI): Handling problematic fans can get challenging and Taylor Swift reportedly took help from the new-age facial recognition technology to keep a tab on her stalkers.
At the popular singer’s Rose Bowl concert in May, a kiosk was set up where the star’s rehearsal clips were being played.
Little did the onlookers know that a facial recognition camera was hiding behind the kiosk’s screen that took images for a cross-check with a database of Swift’s known list of stalkers at a Nashville-based command post, Mashable reported.
Given the singer’s history with stalkers breaking into her house or sending death threats, it is understandable that she would go lengths in ensuring her own safety.
However, it is nonetheless quite unnerving to have one’s pictures clicked without knowledge over the possibility of being a stalker. (ANI)

"Alexa, remind me to take the chicken out when I get home" command will now work

Alexa_mar11.jpg

Alexa

Washington [United States], December 11 (ANI): Amazon has made Alexa a tad smarter with a series of updates introduced recently. As part of the dozen update, Alexa can now provide one with a location-specific reminder.
Devices which support the smart assistant, such as Amazon’s own Echo line of devices, can now perform time and location-based routines and reminders which are triggered at a specific time or when you enter or leave a specific area, Engadget reported.
Once you update the Alexa app on your phone and permit it access to location, you will be able to set up routines such as a reminder for taking out the trash when you get back home or turn off the lights when you step out, and so on.
You can also place calls to local businesses and ask Alexa to provide a summary of your emails. Alexa can also recognise time-based triggers in routines. For instance, you can now include a 30-minute delay to your morning routine before Alexa starts to read headlines. (ANI)

Google+ bug again exposed data from 52.5 million accounts

1539175761_Google_Oct06.jpg

Google

California [United States], December 11 (ANI): Google has discovered another bug in its soon-to-shut social network Google+ which reportedly exposed user data from 52.5 million accounts.
The company had announced back in October that it would shut down the service in August 2019 because of a bug that had exposed 500,000 users’ data for about three years. However, the latest discovery suggests Google should have shut down the service sooner.
According to Wired, Google fixed the new-found bug in the last month and claims that there is no evidence on the data misuse during that time. However, the company has now decided to terminate the service by April and cut off access to Google+ API in 90 days.
Although the new bug did not witness misuse of the data, the flaw gave the ability to extract large amounts of information such as email addresses and profile data. (ANI)

Instagram

California [United States], December 11 (ANI): If WhatsApp voice messages were not enough, Instagram has also added the new communication feature to its app.
A new microphone button has been added to the photo and video app. You simply need to hold down the microphone in Instagram Direct and record a voice message.
Unlike WhatsApp where you first choose the recipient, on Instagram you can first record the message and then share it with a single contact or group, FastCompany reported.
Additionally, these voice messages appear in the receiver’s chat window as a Wav file and don’t disappear after being listened to. (ANI)

Mars Mission to shorten space traveller's lifespan by 2.5 years: Research

Mars_mission_Dec10.jpg

Representative Image

Moscow [Russia], Dec 10 (ANI/Sputnik): A round trip to Mars will expose space travellers to dangerously high levels of solar radiation that is estimated to shorten their lifespan by two years and a half, a research has found.
The report on how solar energetic particles might affect cosmonauts on a mission to Mars will be unveiled at the conference on space biology and aerospace medicine underway in Moscow.
“Assessments have been made of the impact that radiation, received during a long flight to Mars of up to three years during peak solar activity and with varying density of aluminum protection, might have on a cosmonaut’s total lifespan,” the report read.
The study concluded that a standard human organism travelling to the Mars orbit at a high velocity inside a simple spherical spacecraft “on a two-year expedition to Mars and back (will be exposed to) a combined radiation risk during their lifetime, regardless of age, behind a radiation shield of 20 grams per square centimetre, estimated at 7.5 per cent, with an average lifespan reduction of 2.5 years.”
Russian scientists will suggest using sleeping bags with water insulation and mineral water consumption to mitigate the harmful effect of solar radiation.
“(Among the measures) up for consideration is the use of sleeping bags that have water gel or polyethylene powder as insulator. Water and plastic have light elements in them, such as hydrogen, which protect against primary and secondary neutrons,” the research read.
The supply of drinking water, the research further says, needs to have a certain mineral composition as solutions containing silver ions, for instance, can amplify the pathogenic effect of ionizing radiation. Consumption of preservatives should be avoided for the same reason.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in March that a manned mission to Mars was one of the country’s goals, alongside lunar and deep space exploration. Last year, Russian scientists began psychological experiments to see how a mixed crew of people from different countries can fare in simulated isolation. (ANI/Sputnik)
