Also, no series nominations were received by ‘The Americans,’ ‘Transparent’ or CBS All Access’ ‘The Good Wife’ spinoff, ‘The Good Fight.’
While a number of TV industry figures learned the exciting news that their work is up for Primetime Emmy Awards on Thursday morning, several high-profile, eligible shows were left out.
Series not nominated for Emmys in major categories this year include The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Insecure, The Good Fight, The Big Bang Theory, Mr. Robot and The Young Pope.
Also not receiving nominations in major categories for their final seasons were Girls (although it did receive a few nominations in the guest-acting categories), Bloodline (but last year’s supporting actor drama winner Ben Mendelsohn scored a guest actor in a drama series nomination for his brief role in the Netflix series’ third season) and The Leftovers.
While stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys were nominated for best drama actress and actor awards, respectively, for their roles in The Americans, the series was not nominated in the best drama category. Similarly, star Jeffrey Tambor was nominated, but Transparent was left out of the best comedy series category.
In terms of individual snubs, Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek and Goliath‘s Billy Bob Thornton were both left out of the drama actors category. Insecure‘s Issa Rae and Girls‘ Lena Dunham were not included in the best comedy actress category. Homeland‘s Claire Danes did not get a nom for best actress in a drama. Better Call Saul‘s Michael McKean was left out of the drama supporting actor category. While The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks did get a nomination for best TV movie, star Oprah Winfrey did not earn an individual nomination for her acting.
While This Is Us received multiple nominations, star Mandy Moore was not one of the castmembers singled out for her performance. And Bojack Horseman being left out of the animated series category also raised eyebrows.
Orange Is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox received nominations for the show’s fourth season, but Samira Wiley, who was nominated for her performance in The Handmaid’s Tale was not nominated for her role in the Netflix series, which also didn’t receive a series nomination.
Although Veep received two supporting actor in a comedy nominations, and many nominations in other categories, Timothy Simons was not nominated for his portrayal of Jonah Ryan.
On the surprises front, perhaps the biggest shock was a nomination for Stranger Things‘ Shannon Purser (Barb).
