Doctors at Medica Hospital remove tumour from an old man's sinonasal cavity

Medica_Imagedec20.jpg

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India] Dec 20, (BusinessWire India): Jiban Kumar Das, a 74-year-old man, got his life back when the doctors at Medica Hospital removed a large nasal mass. The miraculous surgery was completed within 45 minutes and that too under local anaesthesia, especially when the patient was close to a heart failure condition. He had already underwent nasal surgery thrice before this, but every time the mass would grow again!
Most other hospitals had either refused the patient, and a few others had said the patient might die during the surgery, as recalled by the family members of the patient. When they were almost losing hope, they were told by one of their relatives to come to Medica as the last option. The patient reported with respiratory distress coupled with cough, as recalled by the ENT team.
Immediately, Echo screening and CT scan were done; he was put on conservative management and the ENT team advised him to undergo an endoscopy, which revealed a tumour. Thankfully, the notorious nasal tumour in the nose was a benign tumour which was recurrently causing the discomfort along with bleeding from nose off and on which was more worrying for the patient and the family.
Medical history of Jiban Kumar transpires that he was a smoker, which he left almost 20 years back. In the ’80s, Jiban Kumar started to experience some problems-cold, discharge from the nose, headaches, and difficulty in breathing. The sense of smell was missing, too. The doctors then detected a nasal tumour. In simple words, inverted papilloma is a recurrent benign tumour which has a tendency to grow inside the nose and Paranasal sinuses and it can turn into a bad cancerous lesion on long standing. Jiban had his mass sometimes hanging out of his nose when he sneezed and this embarrassment caused him to become a recluse, recalls his elder daughter, Piyu.
In 1994, his daughters forced him to go for a surgery to remove his nasal tumour. By 1996 again, he was operated for the same in a hospital in Kolkata but the nasal tumour refused to die down. Experts say that nasal tumours have a tendency to grow back. By this time, he had developed other complication like that of the heart and kidney. He even had to undergo a pacemaker implant for his heart. “He visited other hospitals in Kolkata for this ENT problem but all of them refused to treat him fearing his heart condition,” said Piyu.
His daughter, Piyu, narrated that on his arrival at Medica, the doctors found out that Jiban Kumar was very close to a heart failure.
“He came to us and he was desperate to undergo a surgery. Since he was in high spirit, we agreed to operate upon him. A multi-disciplinary opinion from Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Nephrology departments was taken before the surgery keeping in mind his poor health conditions,” said Dr. Arjun Dasgupta, Consultant-ENT.
“Unfortunately, he had severe medical conditions which made the operation very risky. His multiple comorbidities like a poor heart, lung and renal condition, were certainly a concern for the OT. He got a heavenly relief post-surgery,” said Dr. Anupama S Satpathy, Junior Consultant, ENT.
“We were indeed surprised noticing his speed of the recovery. We will advise anybody who’s suffering from the same condition not to wait – just go and get it done. It makes you feel a lot better,” opined Dr. N.V.K. Mohan, ENT Consultant and Dr. Chirajit Dutta, ENT Consultant.
“After the surgery, I feel relieved for the first time in many years. It’s a fantastic feeling and I’m over the moon. I have a perfect nose again!” said Jiban, after his complete recovery.
“It’s a very gratifying outcome for the patient and very rewarding for the surgeons; to be able to make someone feel better especially after years and years of discomfort,” said Dr. Alok Roy, Chairman, Medica Group of Hospitals. (BusinessWire India)

EB-5 skyrockets in India as H1-B under new threat: US Freedom Capital

Ankit_Dec20.jpg

Ankit Bhandari

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] Dec 20 (Newsvoir): US Freedom Capital, among India’s leading EB-5 investment consulting firms today said that it expects the process completion time (from application to receipt of Green Card) to increase from 2 years to over 5 years for new applicants if they apply around July 2019 under the EB-5 Visa scheme. India has also witnessed a staggering increase in applications for I-526 petitions. Since FY2008 the number of EB-5 investors from India has jumped 1,405%.
It is expected at this rate, the number of EB-5 visas actually issued could hit the annual cap of 700 by July 2019 – or in other words the maximum number allowed per year, leading to the much higher waiting time for newer applicants.
“The great American Dream is being chased by many more Indians than ever in the past two decades, as indicated by the USCIS numbers. Since the inception of the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa in FY1992, nearly 1,860 Indian investors have submitted their I-526 petition to USCIS and invested in a variety of EB-5 projects across the United States, contributing over $742 million in foreign direct investment to the U.S. economy. In FY2017 alone, IIUSA estimates that approximately $235 million EB-5 funding was generated by the investors from India, a 66% growth from FY2016,” said Ankit Bhandari, VP – Investments, US Freedom Capital.
Earlier H-1B Visas were the priority route but with the tightening of norms by the US Government in recent years, EB-5 has now started to gain favour with the investors. On December 3rd, 2018, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed regulatory amendments around H-1B petitions. These amendments intend to put in place greater favorability in H-1B selection towards U.S. master’s degree holders, who are described as “more meritorious” than other beneficiaries. Under the proposed reform, Internet-based electronic registration would be mandatory for all petitioners filing for H-1B on behalf of their employees. Petitioners would be given a specified window to register the details of each candidate, which would then be added to a pool of randomly selected candidates from a computer-generated program.
Although the proposed changes are the Trump administration’s first attempt to enact regulatory reforms to H-1B, the program has been under threat since April 2017. In a recent report from the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), it was shown that the number of H-1B petitions denied for Indian-born professionals spiked from 16.6% to 23.6% from the 3rd to the 4thquarter of the FY 2017- a 42% increase in the span of three months.
Unlike H-1B, EB-5 does not depend on employer sponsorship nor on a lottery system. Rather, through this program, investors are eligible to apply for a green card and maintain the freedom as well as flexibility to live and work anywhere in the U.S. The EB-5 Investor Visa requires an individual to invest US $500,000 (approximately INR 3.4 crores) in a commercial enterprise in the USA to gain green card for their family, including all unmarried children under 21.
According to Mr Bhandari, “There has been a serious growth trend in applications for I-526 petitions in the last three years. What’s worrisome, however, is that many of these petitions are pending, meaning that the wait time for approval is increasing exponentially. As of October 2018, this number was at 1,633 for Indians alone. As a firm, we have already seen an outpour of interest by clients looking to pursue EB-5 for themselves and their family. At this rate, it would be unwise to risk long waiting times and long application queues. At the same time, it is important to ensure the safety of funds invested and their compliance with the US EB-5 rules for the investors seeking Green Card. This is where the need to have a reliable partner, with a reputation, matters”.

The above figures under each year depict the number of I-526 petitions still pending from that specific year as of October 2018. (Newsvoir)

The show will be the first original production on Rishtey and will also be available on the network’s OTT platform VOOT.

‘Navrangi Re!’ is a drama series that tells a powerful story to address an urgent issue faced by urban India. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded BBC Media Action to create and develop ‘Navrangi Re!’. The show is being produced by Swastik Productions.

However, this is the first time that Gates Foundation has partnered with a satellite television network in India. ‘Navrangi Re!’ is an innovative approach to engage TV viewing audiences, digital citizens and social media users on sanitation issues.”
‘Navrangi Re!’ is the story of a congested mohalla (a neighbourhood) in a town in Northern India full of real, but quirky and endearing characters. Vishwaas, the hero of this 26-episode television drama series, played by actor Aamir Ali, is a struggling TV journalist who is not able to deliver ‘breaking news’ stories and finds his job on the line. But in this hunt for stories, he discovers the gateway to bring about change for his Mohalla, aided by a few others. It is entertainment all the way using an ensemble cast made up of thespian actors such as Sushmita Mukherjee, Raju Kher, Vaishnavi Dhanraj and other promising talent.
Speaking about the partnership, Radharani Mitra, Global Creative Advisor, BBC Media Action said, “BBC Media Action has created narrative-based interventions across the world, in partnership with public and private sector media networks that deliver a message but still entertain, and bring back viewers week after week. That’s where the power of storytelling and compelling content come in. This partnership takes ‘flush ke baad’ (after flushing) into the space of mainstream media to reach TV viewing audiences.” (Newsvoir)
