Hamas turned the civilian areas of Shejaiya into an urban battleground, both above and below ground. Hamas dug tunnels from Shejaiya into Israel. It turned homes into battle positions. It used mosques and other civilian infrastructure for military activities. Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israel. Hamas fighters donned civilian dress and women’s dress in their fight.
Under the laws of armed conflict (LOAC), Shejaiya became a legal military target which Israel counter-attacked. Any civilian deaths in Shejaiya are a result of Hamas prosecuting a war from within a built up civilian area. Israel owes no apologies for the results of exercising its right of self defence. If Gazans and Hamas pursue a war while fighting from and embedded in civilian infrastructure, Israel will legally do what it needs to do to stop Gazans and Hamas from attempting to harm Israel and its population.

Muslims have the youngest age profile of all religious groups in the UK,70 with 33% aged fifteen or under and 48% below the age of twenty-five.71 Meanwhile, Muslims account for 9% of babies and toddlers aged 0-4years old.72 The Census 2011 indicates that the overall Muslim population in England and Wales is 4.8%, while the Muslim youth population between 18-24 constitutes 6.2% of the general youth population within that age category. As such, Muslim youth have a huge potential to
innovation, and dynamism that is traditionally associated with younger generations. However, at the same time, policies and issues surrounding youth and schools will necessarily have a disproportionate impact upon Muslim communities due to their over representation within young age demographics. Therefore, policy development and implementation must be sensitive to the needs of Muslim families.73 In particular, issues surrounding barriers to young Muslims’ development must take into account religiocultural factors. For example, university tuition fees are a concern for many young people across the UK.
However, this barrier has an added layer of nuance when taking into account the desire of young Muslims to adhere to their religious beliefs in not paying interest, which is inherent in Government Student Loans. A solution in terms of offering Shariah compliant finance, also known as Alternative Student Finance (ASF), has been developed by the Government but has hitherto not been implemented.74 We believe that the offering of Shariah-compliant student loans would not only encourage Muslim students from the UK who would otherwise be deterred from applying to university but would also be attractive to potential Muslim students from overseas.

In recent times, the IRU has been approached by around a dozen students across the country requesting support in accessing prayer space in schools. The provision of a multi-faith prayer space is relatively simple to facilitate and has wide-reaching benefits to both students and the school environment. With prayer as an integral principle of Islamic faith and practice, facilitating this observance allows Muslim students to develop their religious identities with confidence and feel secure in their positions as members of society. However, the benefits of a multi-faith prayer space are not restricted to Muslim children, but
also contribute towards the healthy religious identity formation for the students of all faiths who may choose to access it. Moreover, studies have repeatedly demonstrated the value of meditation, mindfulness, and contemplative practice for young people in combatting stress, improving social and academic skills, and generally promoting mental wellbeing. The University of Surrey found that participants who engaged in mindfulness showed a 58% reduction in anxiety and a 40% reduction in perceived stress.83

Israel is headed for a third election in a year, for the first time ever. The new election comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a series of corruption charges and after the two largest parties failed to reach an agreement to join forces.
Israel’s speaker of parliament, Yuli Edelstein, announced that the Knesset had voted to break up and hold new elections.
It is the first time in Israel’s history that this has happened, and comes because neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party, nor former Chief of Staff Benny Gantz’s Blue and White Party, managed to cobble together a majority government. Since the last election in September, President Reuven Rivlin has pushed for a unity government between the two parties.
Israel Radio played a song called, “I Couldn’t Do Anything,” and then a recent quote by Rivlin. He said, “I call on both Likud and Blue and White to realize that the people do not want another election.”
Negotiations foundered on who would be prime minister first and for how long. At the same time, neither of the two larger parties was able to reach the magic number of 61 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.
Israeli analyst Amir Oren told I24 news that something is broken in the Israeli system.
“Israel is now the land of everlasting elections. Every couple of months, or every four months, we are heading into a new election to break the deadlock; however, it all depends on one or two seats would could bring either side across the top,” said Oren.
The new election, scheduled for March, comes as Netanyahu stands accused of bribery and corruption in several cases. Many Israeli analysts have speculated that Netanyahu wants to go into his trial as prime minister.
Netanyahu maintains he is innocent of all charges. He is being challenged for leadership of the Likud by a young, dynamic Knesset member named Gideon Saar, and there will be a Likud primary later this month.
There is also growing speculation that Netanyahu might agree to step down from politics in exchange for a presidential pardon . But either way, March 2020 will find Israelis back at the polls.
