After keeping things pretty lowkey throughout 2018, Somalia-born, Toronto-bred singer Amaal has ushered in an effective new year with the arrival of her new track, “Not What I Thought.”
On the cut, Amaal tackles life after love, processing the emotions of heartbreak and attaching them to an equally-captivating visual, directed by Sean Brown, known for his creative work with Daniel Caesar.
“I feel as a woman there is a deep personal connection to Mother Nature in all her forms,” Amaal says of the clip. “I wanted to represent my oneness with the earth in all these raw majestic places. Showing that regardless of the hurt caused, we are powerful beyond measure.”
Get into Amal’s latest and keep an ear peeled for the singer’s forthcoming debut EP.
You don’t know nothin’ ’bout me
I don’t know nothin’ ’bout you, now
I thought it would never be us
Another flam into dust, now
