The “Check for Update” button finally works on Pixel phones with Google Play Services 12.2.09

If you own a Pixel or Pixel 2 handset, you are probably aware of the sheer futility of tapping the ‘Check for Update‘ button in Settings. Regardless of how many times you pressed it, nothing happened. Zip. Nada. You could tap it until the cows came home but nothing really happened. Until today, that is, because the latest beta build of the Google Play Services app finally enables the function.

According to users on Reddit (via Droid Life), the version 12.2.09 of the Google Play Services app enables the ‘Check for Update’ function on Pixel handsets. Google Play Services App version 12.2.09 is currently only available on the Play Store via the beta channel, which you can join here. The other option is to simply sideload this newest version of the Google Play Services app from APK Mirror, after which you’ll remain on the stable channel while still having a functioning ‘Check for Update’ button.

The upshot of having a working ‘Check for Update’ button is that you can tap it just the once and you’ll be able to download and install the February Security update. Yes, really. You’ll be able to bypass the incremental rollout phase that Google implements and download the update straight to your Pixel handset. No sideloading, no waiting. This should be possible for most phones and tablets using Google’s OTA systems, including Android One.
