Super-speciality hospital to soon come up in Aundh The facility to be built on district hosp campus will have capacity of 275 beds with advanced equipment.

With a view to bring relief to Sassoon General Hospital and the Aundh District Hospital (ADH) that cater to an increasing number of patients, the public health department of Maharashtra has decided to open a superspeciality hospital. This facility will come up on the ADH campus and a proposal regarding the same has recently been sent to the principal secretary of the department.

According to authorities, Pune district has expanded by leaps and bounds over the years and only Sassoon and ADH share the burden of ever-increasing number of patients. This new facility, therefore, will have a capacity of 275 beds and advanced equipment for screening and surgical procedures.

Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, deputy director of health services, Pune circle, said, “Over the past few years, the population in Pune district has tremendously increased. The current volume of patients with critical problems has to depend on either Sassoon General Hospital or ADH for treatment. There is a dire need for a specialised hospital in the region and a proposal for the same has been sent to the principal secretary.”

Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Laxman Jagtap from Chinchwad has written to the public health department’s principal secretary in January this year, demanding that a super-speciality hospital be set up on ADH campus. The MLA had further pointed that lakhs of people reside in areas such as Hinjawadi, Ravet, Baner, Wakad, Pashan and Balewadi and there was an urgent need to build a facility for them.

According to a census in 2011, Pune district has a population of almost 94 lakh. The population of twin cities — Pimpri and Chinchwad — is around 50 lakh. The district civic surgeon has mentioned these details and sent a draft to the authorities concerned.

Deskhmukh continued, “The super-speciality hospital will include facilities such as cardiovascular section, cath lab, neurology and neuro-surgery, oncology and oncosurgery, urology, nephrology and ophthalmology. At present, two super-speciality hospitals are run by the public health department; one at Nashik and the other in Amravati. The Aundh one will be third in the state.”

Dr R K Shelke, district civil surgeon, added, “Along with this proposal, we have also asked to increase the capacity at ADH from 300 to 500 beds. Even a 100-bed Women’s Hospital will come up on ADH campus. At present, there are 10 women’s hospitals in Nagpur, Baramati, Akola, Jalna, Beed, Nanded, etc., and this will be the second one in the district.”

Shelke further said, “The Women’s Hospital will have high-tech facilities for various disorders. We are also working towards making the facilities at this hospital in par with other private centres. Facilities such as neo-natal care and pre and post pregnancy care will be available at the hospital.”
