What the San Antonio Spurs have done to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first two games of their first round series in the 2016 NBA Playoffs is illegal in at least 46 states.
In Game 2 the Grizzlies lowered that mark by tying a franchise low for any quarter with 11 points.
“You’ve got the strength and conditioning coaches here that know how to prolong your body throughout the season”, Leonard said. “Especially at their place, it’s going to be a whole lot tougher. Teams come out with a different face on any given night in the National Basketball Association, so you can lose”. Korver made four from long range, a big turnaround from a 1-of-10 performance in Game 1 that didn’t include any threes.
Kevin Martin and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 10 points each for the Spurs, who are 6-0 against Memphis this season. Memphis is also playing without forward Brandan Wright and guard Jordan Adams, both out with injuries. The Memphis Grizzlies are without point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol.
As expected, the Grizzlies bodied up on Spurs players out to the three-point line and tried to complicate things before they could receive the ball – anything to keep the San Antonio offense from getting into a rhythm.
Game 3 of the series is Friday in Memphis. Though he played 30 minutes in Game 1’s 106-101 win he scored just 2 points to go along with 6 rebounds. “That’s how they play”.
“Offensively, we need to be on the attack… and be aggressive”, Mills said. It doesn’t matter where we play – here, at a YMCA or in Memphis, we just have to play better. Spurs coach Greg Popovich not happy, thinking it was a foul. We don’t think like that.
“Every game is different”, Green said. “We just have to be better, including myself”.
Griz forward Matt Barnes expounded on his going to a “gunfight with spoons” comment from Tuesday night.
“I heard that”, he said.
On top of holding the Grizzlies to just 32 percent shooting, including an 11-point first quarter, the Spurs buried 9-of-17 three-pointers, which extended the lead and gave their starters even more rest.
Memphis backed into the playoffs closing the 2015-16 campaign with a straight up record of 1-11 in their final 12 regular season affairs. It’s a full-game mentality. “Teams are coming to play and every possession counts”.
“He was my vet (veteran). It’s not like I’m looking at it like this guy can’t defend”. “Our battles in practice were very physical, very competitive”. With no threats to hurt them from the outside, the Spurs were able to focus on Randolph, crowding the paint. I just have to stay positive.
Mills came off the bench to finish with a game-high 16 points, leading four Spurs in double digits.
