Soon, liver transplant at IGIMSPATNA: Liver transplant at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) is likely to become a reality from mid-April.

The hospital has purchased all the major equipment required for liver transplant surgery, such as cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator, rapid infusion pump, ICU set, four liver transplant unit (LTU) beds and two high dependency unit (HDU) beds. Head of IGIMS’s liver transplant unit-cum-medical superintendent Dr Manish Mandal said the hospital had acquired required infrastructure to conduct liver transplant surgeries.

The IGIMS had applied for no objection certificate (NOC) to start the facility in May last year. In response to the application, the state health department reviewed the facilities at the hospital and verified the documents related to doctors’ qualification and experience. It finally awarded the NOC to the hospital in November last year.

Dr Manish said the IGIMS had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Delhi in September last year. “Thirty doctors went through rigorous training in October and November last year to understand the minor details of the pre and post-surgery. The team of doctors included four surgeons – Dr Sanjay Kumar, Dr R K Singh, Dr Manish and Dr Amarjeet Kumar Raj,” he added.

“Once the facility is introduced at IGIMS, patients need not got to metro cities for liver transplant. Hospitals in big cities used to charge anywhere between Rs 32 lakh and Rs 40 lakh for liver transplant. The same surgery will be done at IGIMS for just Rs 12 lakh, excluding the cost of immuno-suppressants drug that patients need to take lifelong,” Dr Manish said.

He added in case of acute liver failure, a patient should go for transplant within 24-48 hours. “However, the time limit is up to 4 months in case of chronic liver failure,” Dr Manish said.

IGIMS is the sixth government hospital in the country to get the nod to start this complicated surgery. The others are PGI Chandigarh, AIIMS Delhi, ILBS Delhi, MGR Chennai and SGPGI Lucknow. “The ILBS doctors will handle first 10 cases of liver transplant at IGIMS. They will be assisted by IGIMS doctors. The next 10 cases will be handled by IGIMS doctors,” Dr Manish said.
