RHP Jordan Zimmermann was very good in his debut with the Detroit Tigers.
Sabathia made it to the seventh inning Saturday in an 8-4 win over the Detroit Tigers, allowing only four hits in his first start since missing the postseason in 2015 while in alcohol rehabilitation. Coming on to face the player that is replacing Cespedes in the Tigers lineup, Cessa punched out Upton to begin his career. And I’ll take the blame for today. “I was all over the place. I didn’t do a whole lot of things to be successful today”.
The 35-year-old lefthander, flawless through three innings, was charged with three runs and allowed four hits and four walks in six innings-plus. One-out singles by J.D. Martinez, Nick Castellanos, and James McCann off Severino loaded the bases in the fourth, and Iglesias gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with his single to right-center. He retired the first nine batters and had only one messy stretch, in the fourth.
The next inning, after the Tigers bit back with two runs, with Brian McCann on first with one out, Carlos Beltran cranked a long home run into the seats in right to get those runs back and make it 8-2 NY.
There were snowflakes floating above the field shortly before the game, but that wasn’t much of a factor after the first pitch.
“We’ve always had his back”, manager Joe Girardi said, motioning toward the clubhouse.
In Philadelphia, Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points and Robin Lopez had 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead NY past the Sixers.
In the top of the second inning, Didi Gregorius’s RBI single made it 2-0 and then in the top of the fourth, Gregorius’ sac fly made it 3-0 in favor of the Yankees.
Miguel Cabrera also helped Zimmermann clinch the W with an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the seventh. Mike Aviles lined out to deep left with the bases loaded to end that rally. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Detroit is favored at home, as the Tigers are getting odds of -110 to win, while the Yankees are getting a money line of +100 to win.
“My wife and my mom”, Sabathia said, when asked with whom he wanted to share this win.
While the offense was dominant, the highlight of the contest was Starlin Castro recording career hit number 1,000 at just 26-years of age.
CC Sabathia was grateful to be back on the mound in a regular-season game – even if it meant having to pitch in freezing temperatures.
“It’s something that we have to deal with, and you have to try to get more distance out of them”, Girardi said.
“I was a little upset with a couple of the strikes called”.
“It was warmer in here, but I would’ve rather have been out there”, Ausmus said.
Sabathia opened up publicly about his personal three-year struggle, which hit rock bottom following a weekend drinking binge in Baltimore and left question marks about his career. Martinez followed that up with a 1-for-4 performance in game two, leaving three runners on base.
All seems well in Tiger Town as the team is 3-0 to start the season.
