OPP to review Amber Alert response

York Regional Police allege that Mario Rodrigues broke into his ex-wife’s house and took their four-year-old daughter, Julia Dela Cruz, early Monday morning.

There is no word on their condition.

Police have issued an Amber Alert for a five-year-old girl they allege was abducted this morning by her father in Aurora, Ont. The officer discontinued his attempt to stop the vehicle.

Both occupants had non-life threatening injuries but as a precaution little Julia was flown by air ambulance to CHEO.

The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was notified by the OPP and has invoked its mandate.

Police say the girl was responsive when they removed her from the vehicle.

Anyone with information should call police. The auto crashed around 9:30 a.m. when it rounded a curve in the road on Paul Martin Drive.

The SIU says six investigators will probe in the incident.

Arnold Rodrigues, the girl’s uncle, said the officers chasing his brother should have allowed him to slow down on his own.

“I couldn’t believe it”, says Peter Russell, who works at a building near the crash scene, “I looked out window and saw dozen of police cars and the van tipped over on the bank”.

“I saw cops all over here”, says Gary Hass, another nearby employee, “It is a bad corner”.
