Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: 5 talking points

The 1-0 loss to Manchester United on Saturday Night Football confirmed Villa’s demotion, and has led to the side being dubbed one of the worst in top-flight history.

United survived a couple of late scares, including Villa hitting the woodwork, although a draw would still have seen the visitors demoted to the Championship.

Black said: “I saw them (the players) applaud and I must admit I told them to”. I thought the performance (on Saturday), they worked extremely hard for it, but it’s not today (that’s caused relegation).”I agree we have to give the fans more entertainment”, said Van Gaal.”It’s a minimal step”.

“I know it is hard against a defensively organised team like Aston Villa – they were very compact – but then you need quick possession play and the gaps will exist”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme, Ellis said: “I don’t think I could be any sadder than I am today but it has been obvious since Christmas that we were going down”.

Villa ought to have claimed an equaliser as substitute Rudy Gestede twice went close within moments of joining the fray. Van Gaal may blame his players but his negative style of play, where possession is prioritised above all else, is detrimental to attacking verve and against everything that United have stood for over the years. He was losing the ball [several times] in a row but that’s also logical when you’re not playing for two months and not training for two months. He does not feel the pressure and I reckon he’s very bright and intelligent in his style of play.

“Always we try to put everything on the pitch, give everything – every game we do the same”.

Jamaal Lascelles scored his first goal for the club in the first-half, heading home from close range after an Andros Townsend corner was swung into the box.

Caretaker manager Eric Black has spoken of the danger of the club falling into “anarchy” at the end of a miserable campaign played out against the backdrop of fan protests against Randy Lerner’s ownership.

The is Smalling sixth season at the club, which has to be his best yet.

Villa have beaten United only once in the league in the last 20 years and there was never much doubt that the final nail in their long-prepared coffin would be drilled in.

The 18-year-old striker, also on target in United’s FA Cup quarterfinal replay win over West Ham United in midweek, struck in the 32nd minute when he turned in Antonio Valencia’s low cross.
