Liverpool defender, Mamadou Sakho tests positive for banned substance

The reported drug violation, due to a fat-burning substance, is apparently related to Liverpool’s last month Europa League match at Manchester United.

‘The player is now not subject to any playing suspension.

Addendum: A statement subsequently released by the club clarifies that Sakho has not been suspended, but that by mutual agreement, while the investigation is ongoing “the player will not be available for selection”.

According to reports, the France worldwide is likely to ask that his B sample be tested, with Tuesday the deadline to make that request. Fellow defensive partner Kolo Toure was charged with a similar offence when the Ivorian was at Manchester City, for which he was banned for six months by the club.

He scored in the 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund on 14 April which secured their place in the semi-finals.

There will be no further comment at this time“.

Jurgen Klopp says he hasn’t yet had the chance to speak with Mamadou Sakho after the shock revelation that he had failed a UEFA drugs test.

Some United supports have been calling for Liverpool to be kicked out of the Europa League following news of Sakho’s failed test, but there is no chance any action will be taken against the Merseysiders.

Though Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana put them in cruise control at half-time, Papiss Cisse’s header and Jack Colback’s deflected strike allowed the Magpies to snatch a 2-2 draw on Rafael Benitez’s Anfield return.

For those Liverpool fans questioning whether we could be thrown out of the Europa League for Mamadou Sakho’s alleged doping violation, there’s no need to worry.

Sakho is keen to prove that this has been an accident and is generally considered a consummate professional by the club.

The player could face a lengthy suspension and may miss out on representing his country on home soil at this year’s European Championships.
