SpaceX and Tesla‘s verified Facebook pages have been taken down on Friday, minutes after its founder and Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk promised on Twitter to take down the page when challenged by a user.
“Delete SpaceX page on Facebook if you’re the man?” a user tweeted to Tesla & SpaceX chief Musk. His response: “I didn’t realize there was one. Will do.” Both SpaceX and Tesla’s Facebook pages had more than 2.7 million followers.
Musk had begun the exchange on Twitter by jokingly responding to a tweet from WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, that had asked everyone to delete Facebook earlier this week.
“What’s Facebook?” Musk tweeted. In subsequent tweets, Musk said he wasn’t aware that both the companies had Facebook pages and will be deleted shortly. At the time of writing this article, both the pages are showing an error message saying “Sorry, this content isn’t available right now”.
Musk also noted he doesn’t use Facebook and “never have, so don’t think I’m some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don’t advertise or pay for endorsements, so … don’t care.”
When asked about the company’s accounts on Facebook-owned photo-sharing service Instagram, Musk said the service was “probably ok, so long as it stays fairly independent”.
