Cubs give up 4 homers, lose to Reds 13-5

Jake Arrieta threw baseball’s first no-hitter of 2016 last night in a 16-0 Cubs win over the Reds.

When he went to the Chicago Cubs as part of a trade that included bonus slots for global players, Jake Arrieta was convinced he’d someday do great things.

Kershaw has had a tight grip on that prestigious title over five years with three Cy Young awards, an NL MVP, five All-Star game selections, a Gold Glove (2011), and a Triple Crown (2011). And his Cubs are on the rise, too, trading their loser label for the top spot in the majors.

Among other results, the World Series champion Kansas City moved to the top of the American League Central division by beating Detroit while their nearest rivals, the Chicago White Sox, lost narrowly at home against the Los Angeles Angels, while Baltimore beat Toronto to open a 3-1/2 game lead atop the AL East.

The Cubs have won their last eight games overall against the Reds.

Arrieta is among several pitchers in the last decade to pitch two no-hitters. It’s the most runs the Cubs have allowed since August 31, 2015, coincidentally, also against the Reds, that one at Wrigley Field.

That’s all I’ve got for this recap, and you probably don’t want to read much more about this game (I sure don’t). “I expected to get to this point at some point, regardless of how long it took or what I had to go through to get there”.

“I wasn’t attacking the hitters”. So now it’s starting to happen for me. “That’s something I’ll take into my next start”. Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio was the second pitcher in Seattle Mariners’ history to pitch a no-no.

A Mishawaka native arrested after rushing the field at a Chicago Cubs game is now out of jail.

17 Earned runs allowed in the past 24 starts.

His only loss came when Cole Hamels threw a no-hitter at Wrigley Field, six days before getting traded from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Texas Rangers at the July 31 deadline. Homer Bailey had a good showing on Thursday; in his first rehab start for AAA Louisville.

“Crazy game”, Maddon said.

He didn’t have to second-guess himself.

Arrieta carried that momentum into this season, as he now holds a 4-0 record with a 0.87 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and a 0.68 WHIP in 31.0 innings pitched.

The Cincinnati Reds showed some fight against the Chicago Cubs by responding to two heavy defeats in style in Saturday’s Major League Baseball action.

“Crazy game. They got us tonight”, manager Joe Maddon said. “Man, it was spectacular”. Five walks per game for a full season would be 810 walks. Addison Russell homered [VIDEO], walked three times and scored twice. “Maybe you make some people a little more uncomfortable”, said Lackey, who had two-strike counts on four of the seven hits he allowed – including the two leading off the fourth that led to the first two runs against him.

DETROIT – Marlon Byrd’s tie-breaking leadoff home run in the seventh inning backed the combined four-hit pitching of Josh Tomlin and three relievers as Cleveland defeated Detroit.

With that, the 30-year-old pitcher joined elite company. He’d never been behind the plate for a no-hitter.

And this on a day Lackey’s velocity was in the mid-90s, and “nothing wrong with the stuff”, he said. “That animal was in control the whole time”.
