Kansas City Chiefs doctors have assured the coaching staff that pass rush star Justin Houston will get on the field in 2016.
“I’m not a medical expert, but I can tell you Justin Houston will be playing this season”, Dorsey told reporters.
“Not being a medical expert, I really can’t definitely tell you that answer”, Dorsey said.
The team previously gave a rehab schedule for somewhere between six and 12 months for Houston who has surgery on his ACL in February. Houston is the best player on the team at this juncture and having him back for all or most of the season is massive.
Despite Houston’s knee injury and lackluster season, the Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) made it to two the divisional round of the playoffs after pulling it together and winning 10 consecutive games.
But then Kansas City head trainer Rick Burkholder spoke at the National Football League owner’s meetings, and all hell broke loose.
“He was up here last week”, Dorsey said. He’s doing great. He’s dialed in.
With fifth-year option decisions on 2013 first-round picks due by Tuesday, May 3, the Chiefs say they won’t make a decision on whether they’ll exercise the option on Fisher until after the draft. I think what I do is, I’m, at times, compartmentalizing a little bit too much.
The Chiefs held formal interviews with at least three edge rushers at the Combine – Dadi Nicolas of Virginia Tech, Noah Spence of Eastern Kentucky and Shaq Lawson of Clemson – which has been an indicator of the Chiefs’ interest in the past.
“Now the key there is to have rotational depth and does that rotational depth come from within our system right now or do we go and get it in the draft?”, Dorsey said. “But at the end of the day, that No. 50, he’ll be here”.
