Dehradun: The Uttarakhand health department issued appointment letters to 421 new doctors on Wednesday. Fifty-seven of these doctors have been posted in three Char Dham districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli a day ahead of the yatra which begins on Wednesday.

According to first list of postings accessed by TOI, Uttarkashi which is home to holy shrines of Yamunotri and Gangotri has got additional 20 doctors. The district has 152 doctors against which only 69 doctors have been deployed. Rudraprayag district, home to Kedarnath shrine, will get 12 more doctors. The district has 73 sanctioned posts of doctors against which 57 doctors are deployed.

Chamoli district where Badrinath shrine is located has got 25 new doctors. The district has 51 doctors against the sanctioned posts of 171 medical practitioners.

Nitesh Kumar Jha, secretary of Uttarakhand health department, said, “Our focus is to ensure that all hospitals in Uttarakhand have at least 70% of the sanctioned number of doctors. Char Dham route is also a high priority area. We will also deploy super-specialists in these three districts to aid pilgrims and local residents.”

The hill state, which has 2,716 sanctioned posts of government doctors, now has 1,500 doctors.

Jha said that doctors have also been given postings based on “convenience” so they have an incentive to join the service.

In order to allure the doctors join the department, they have been given convenience postings, Jha said.

“We ensure married couples are posted nearby while some are deployed in native places. It is for the first time that many of the doctors who were called for interview showed willingness to join,” he said.
